NEFA stands for North-East Frontier Agency, formerly known as the North-East Frontier Tracts, was a political division during British India. After independence in 1947, it became a part of the state of Assam, after which it was under the rule of the state of Assam until it was renamed as a union territory. Its name was changed to the Union Territory of Arunachal Pradesh on 20 January 1972
